Black ice on major roads can cause serious damage.

The National Weather Service's Upton forecast office issued a black ice alert Wednesday evening for Suffolk County — including the Southampton area — and it is expected to last through the Thursday morning commute.

"As temperatures fall to near or below freezing, road conditions could became slippery through at least mid-morning Thursday as any standing water and slush refreeze and as patches of black ice develop," the alert states. "Anyone out traveling through the Thursday morning commute should be prepared for slippery conditions and use extra caution."

Temperatures are expected to dip to 32 degrees overnight in Southampton, then warm up to just 42 degrees Thursday before rain and snow in the evening, with a low of 27 degrees.
