Southampton Town police said Tuesday afternoon that the body of a jet skier who had gone missing Sunday night in Mecox Bay was recovered in the waters near Cobb Road in Water Mill mid-afternoon on Tuesday.
According to Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa, locals "observed something suspicious in the waters" Tuesday afternoon. Police said Tuesday evening that a call came in around 12:30 p.m. The body was soon after recovered and removed to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office.
The man was identified as 29-year-old Astoria, Queens, resident Eleuterio Ubisse.
Costa said that the medical examiner's office is performing an autopsy, however, officials believe that drowning was the cause of death. Costa said the man was not wearing a life vest.
Southampton Fire Department rescuers were called to the bay at 6:47 p.m. on Sunday to respond to the jet ski accident, which left two people, one man and one woman, in the water. The woman swam back to the jet ski, Costa said, and was later rescued by a passing boater.
Once on the scene, Southampton, Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton fire departments all put boats in the water to search for the missing man while a Suffolk County police helicopter was called to search by air, according to emergency workers. Officials had to cut short Sunday night's rescue efforts due to adverse weather, and a 13-hour search on Monday proved unsuccessful.
