Sybil Christopher, one of the original founders of Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, has died.

The theater announced her passing on its website on Saturday morning.

Christopher, who would turn 84 this year, also served as the artistic director at Bay Street for nearly 22 years.

Her cause of death was not provided.

Christopher founded Bay Street Theatre, a not-for-profit 299-seat professional theater, in 1991 along with Steve Hamilton and Emma Walton Hamilton.

She stepped down in 2012, but remained a consultant.

"I've been thinking about it for a long time," said Christopher in a statement released at the time, "but I wasn't sure when or how to do it…maybe I should be carried out feet first every summer I was beginning to feel like I was missing out on family adventures. I also want to do some traveling but also it is time to slow down a bit and enjoy myself."

Christopher was married to Richard Burton, with whom she had two children, including the actress Kate Burton. She later married Jordan Christopher and had a third child.

We send our condolences to Christopher's family and friends. Please remember her in the comments below.
