The roof of La Parmigiana pizzeria and restaurant on Hampton Road in Southampton Village had a small fire Thursday evening that caused the business to be evacuated, but it was quickly extinguished.
Southampton Fire Department was called in at 6:41 p.m. A worker at La Parmigiana said shingle work was being done on the roof, when it caught fire. He said he asked the occupants of the restaurant to leave, then grabbed a fire extinguisher and put the fire out.
Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner said firefighters soaked the fire-afflicted area of the roof with a water can and checked to see if the fire had extended anywhere, but found it was confined to the roof.
A rapid intervention team — which stands at the ready to go in to rescue a firefighter in distress — from Hampton Bays Fire Department was called to the scene. A Bridgehampton Fire Department crew was called to stand by at Southampton's main firehouse on Hampton Road. Both calls were canceled while the departments were en route, because the situation was under control, Brenner said,
While the Southampton Fire Department was responding to the restaurant, another fire was reported in the village on Hillcrest Avenue, and North Sea Fire Department was asked to respond, Brenner said. There, North Sea firefighters found a stove fire and extinguished it quickly.
