Update - A container left on the steps of a physical therapy office that set off a hazmat scare Tuesday afternoon in Southampton Village turned out to just be someone's discarded lobster dinner leftovers and an empty bottle of French wine.
Southampton Village Police Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison said that police were called at 3:03 p.m. by an employee of a physical therapy office about a suspicious package first noticed in the office steps at about 7 a.m.
Southampton Fire Department Chief Rodney "Chip" Pierson said that police called in the fire chiefs to investigate the package — a metal bucket in a white garbage bag
When the fire chiefs arrived, they decided to call in fire marshals for a second opinion, Pierson said, and ultimately the decision was made to call in the Southampton Town Hazmat Team.
The parking lot, which is shared by Manual & Sports Physical Therapy office and Waldbaum's on Jagger Lane and Main Street, was partially closed.
Southampton Village Fire Marshal Dean McNamara and Southampton Town Fire Marshal John Rankin donned hazmat suits and investigated. After removing the lid to the bucket around 4:50 p.m., they found the garbage.
The parking lot was reopened and the office employees discarded the bucket and its contents in a dumpster.
Initial Story:
Emergency responders are gathered in the parking lot shared by Waldbaum's and Manual & Sports Physical Therapy in Southampton Village following a reporting of a suspicious package.
