A new Hurricane Sandy relief effort begun locally focuses on the young victims of the "superstorm."
"My mission is to provide books, games, and crafts for the thousands of children in shelters and who have schools that were destroyed," said Anastasia Gavalas, a Bridgehampton resident who began the drive, which she titled "Sandy Can Suck-It."
"I grew up in Oceanside and lived in Island Park for 10 years before moving out here," Gavalas said. "So, my family and friends were directly hit."
She said her brothers lost their business, and friends' homes flooded.
New and gently used books, games and crafts designed for children will be accepted. Donations can be dropped off at Southampton Intermediate School, or a pickup can be arranged with Gavalas. She can be contacted via email at anastasia.vlahakisgavalas@facebook.com and over Facebook. The drive also has a Facebook fan page.
The collection continues through next week.
