Family Loses a Beloved Pet, Store Loses Its Mascot
When shopping, you expect friendly customer service and to find what you need. At Henry Persan & Sons Hardware in Sag Harbor, long-time customers enjoyed even more — a greeting from a gentle yellow Lab.
Henry, who was 12 and had been sick for several months, died on Sunday.
His passing has left a void in the Persan family, a sadness many of their store's customers feel, as well.

Bonnie Jean's Owner Coming Into Her Own at Former Country Corner Café
Jenni Morris took over the new location of Southold's Country Corner Café in November of 2010, adding a full dinner menu and a comfortable yet thought-provoking vibe to the restaurant. The young restaurateur, who had managed the Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck for three years, redesigned the upstairs loft from a semi-furnished space for private parties into a comfortable nook for those looking to work on their laptops or have a private meeting. And she changed the name from the Country Corner Café to Bonnie Jean’s to honor her older sister, who is developmentally disabled but has always had a great spirit.
Patch chatted with Morris — a 29-year-old Shirley resident who was educated at the Institute of Culinary Education and also runs Long Island Coffee Roasters with her boyfriend, Greg Heinz — about her first venture into restaurant ownership.

Local Business to Raise Money For Bideawee's Damaged Facilities
A day after Hurricane Sandy swept over the area, Bideawee Animal Shelter volunteers learned that the storm had taken its toll on the 100-year-old non-profit's three locations— the Manhattan East River location flooded, the Westhampton location's roof was damaged, and the Wantagh location was without power.
Animals had to be evacuated and staff worked through the night to provide aid and transportation — two weeks later, the Manhattan facility remains closed with over four feet of water in their elevator shaft and lower levels and the Wantagh location is running on generators.
SOUTHAMPTON
Firm Will Examine Southampton Village Retail Opportunities
The Southampton Village Board is bringing in a Michigan-based economic and planning consulting firm to examine what retail opportunities are being underexploited in the village's business districts.
The board voted unanimously Thursday to contract with Gibbs Planning Group for the study, which Mayor Mark Epley said he wants to see get underway as soon as possible.
The aim of the study, Epley explained, is to answer, "How can the village of Southampton improve our Village Business District, by looking at efficiencies in our district and looking at small businesses to come in and open up to meet the needs of the people here?”
